ELF Studio Eyebrow Kit

I'm a believer in filling in eyebrows; an important step that can make or break your look. You wouldn't take a beautiful master piece and stick it in a crummy frame, would you? Think of your eyebrows as the frame to your face and take a moment to fill in your brows.

I fill in my brows (most days), even when I'm doing bare minimum makeup. You'd think that since I feel filling in the brows is so important, I would have owned a dedicated brow product before this month... think again.

I was unaware that so many people filled in their brows, especially younger women. I started filling in my eyebrows about two years ago (give or take) out of necessity. My eyebrows, which had always been very thick, had thinned out dramatically. Initially, I made the mistake of using a brown eye shadow that was a tad too dark, but after some trial and error I landed on a shade that worked. I prefer using a shadow as opposed to a pencil because I think it gives a softer look.

Recently, I've heard lots of talk about the E.L.F Studio Eyebrow Kit, and wanted to give it a try. For some reason the stores nearby me have only had the dark shade, but finally, I was able to find my shade- medium. If you don't read any further, here's my opinion of this product: it is AWESOME! but if you want to know why, continue on. Drugstore Makeup Haul

I receive an insane amount of solicitation emails from stores and companies updating me on current sales and promotions: constantly being bombarded with temptations for my favorite products and stores, even offering me coupons to lure me in to spend more money on their products. I know, it's my own fault. I've brought this upon myself by giving out my email address, but I figure, if I'm already shopping there, I may as well get the deals. Right? My inbox can either be dangerous or delightful; it just depends on how I choose to look at it.

I've been pretty good about eliminating emails lately (that's code for sending them to the trash). One that I did hang on to was an email from Ulta promoting a buy one get one 50% off sale on Maybelline and L'Oreal products. They also had their usual $3.50 off a $10 purchase or $10 off a $60 purchase coupons. Alright, they got me! I had a few items from both makeup brands on my wishlist (the one I keep in my head), so I headed into the store while out with my mom over the weekend.

Nail of the Day: Essie's Tart Deco

I've been searching for a peachy-coral polish and this week I bought Tart Deco from Essie. What a great find! It's such a great shade and was exactly what I was looking for. As soon as I got home from the store I had to do a quick swatch on my nail (before eventually painting all my nails). My first impression- summer bottled up. It's like a liquid version of a creamsicle. This color dries a tad darker than it appears in the bottle, as you'll see in the picture.

Essie Tart Deco

This particular Essie polish is thicker than others I own from the brand. It applies a bit streaky if it the coats are thin. I normally apply thin coats so I had to adjust my application with this polish to achieve a nice finish. When applying thicker coats, allow ample time between applying a second coat of color to make sure that your polish has fully dried. Waiting is hard to do, I know, but trust me, it's important. Not waiting will just result in a gooey mess, unless you have a magic trick up your sleeve... in which case, do share!

Locks of Love

This week I donated my hair to Locks of Love, making this my fifth time donating my hair to this very special organization. I've been growing it out for a while now with the purpose to cut it, and now that it's a new year, what better time to get a new hairstyle and do something I can feel good about in the process. (Before and After pictures at end of the post.)

I donated 11 inches of hair.

Some of you may already be familiar with Locks of Love, but for those of you who are not, I'd like to take a moment to tell you a little bit about them. Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that makes wigs for children (in the US and Canada) who have long term hair loss due to a long-term medical condition. The hair pieces are made for financially disadvantaged children who may not otherwise be able to afford a quality wig. The organization's mission is to "return a sense of self confidence, and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss"

Braided Top Knot Tutorial

Last week I did a tutorial on one of my "go-to" hair styles, the fishtail side braidThis week I wanted to do another tutorial on a different "go to" style of mine, the top knot. A top knot is essentially a high bun, but a less perfect version; you really can't mess it up. Like side braid, the top knot's fast, works great on second day hair, and keeps my hair out of my way. The braided top knot is a step up from the regular version and only takes an extra two minutes, three tops.

OOTD: Sweater and Boots

The temperature has dropped again! It's been so warm lately which is a bummer because I've hardly been able to wear my sweater tops this winter. I didn't want to miss this opportunity to wear a sweater; I took full advantage of the cooler temperature today.

Top: Van Heusen white sweater, Bottoms: Labijou khaki pants, Shoes: Mossimo Black Buckle Boots, Bag: Coach black leather, Coach ocelot ponytail scarf, Jewelry: Banana Republic long flower necklace, Target earrings.

DIY: Lip Scrub

I love lip balms; I wear them all the time, but I'm still susceptible to chapped lips. I have a bad habit of biting my lips. It sounds gross, maybe it is. I know for sure it's a problem because it causes my lips to dry out and crack regularly, not just during the winter like normal people. In addition to wearing lip balms and even applying my face moisturizer to my lips, I need to go a step further and use a scrub and exfoliate them.

Fishtail Braid Tutorial

I have a few go-to hair styles that I repeat regularly. They have earned their “go-to” status because they’re so quick and easy; I can arrange my hair without having to give it much thought or even effort. One of these styles is the side braid. While it’s definitely a convenient style, it looks more pulled together than a simple ponytail. I usually go with a traditional three strand braid; it's just so fast. However, when I have a few extra minutes, I like to spice things up a bit and do a fishtail braid. It's much easier than it may seem and comes together relatively quickly. Oh, and it looks cool too!

True Blue Spa: 60-Second Manicure Hand Scrub

If you saw my December Bath & Body Works Haul, you might recognize this scrub. I've had the True Blue Spa 60-Second Manicure Hand Scrub with Sugar for almost a month and this week was my first time using it. I wanted to share my opinion with you and let you know if I think it's worth splurging on.

True Blue Spa 60-Second Manicure Hand Scrub

Let's get the specifics out of the way first. This is a 5 oz scrub and retails for $12, but I picked this product up for free when purchasing other items at B&BW. It has a strong citrus scent and it reminds me of candy. Not exactly the fragrance that I associate with the word 'spa', but it does go well with the fun pink color of the scrub. I like the smell, but I'm sure some people might not care for how strong it is.

Nail of the Day: Sally Hansen Nude Shimmer

I've been seeing a lot of the metallic nail trend lately. If you saw my previous NOTD you know I did a take on this trend with a metallic silver french manicure. This week I was at Target and saw a display for Sally Hansen Lustre Shine polishes; these are metallic polishes with a hint of shimmer. The display at my store was sparse and of the colors remaining, none were ones that I had to have, but it did spark my inspiration for my polish today.

Sally Hansen Diamond Strength in Nude Shimmer

I went home and shopped my stash. I thought I had another metallic color ( other than the silver I just used) and sure enough I found one, Sally Hansen Diamond Strength in Nude Shimmer. I believe they have a new bottle design out for this line, but this color is still available.

Liebster Award

Last week I was nominated for the Liebster Award by Emily's Elusive Thought Bubble and Beauty, Body and Mind for the Liebster Award. I had never heard of this award/ tag, so I checked out Emily's blog to learn more about it.
What is a Liebster Award?
Bloggers award other up and coming bloggers (with less than 200 followers) with the award.

Instantly, I thought this was a great idea. As a new blogger, I have been focusing much time and energy on my own blog. This year, I want to make it a goal of mine to branch out and discover new blogs. The Liebster Award is a perfect way to get me started with that.

If you receive the Liebster, you must:

  • Tell 11 things about yourself
  • Answer the 11 questions the nominating blogger asked you
  • Ask 11 questions to the blogger you will nominate
  • Nominate 11 new bloggers, no tag backs :)
  • Make sure you notify the bloggers you nominate

Bath & Body Works Semi Annual Sale Haul

I can't seem to stay out of Bath & Body Works! If you saw my last B&BW haul you know that I was sucked in by their $8 candle promotion in December. This time I knew, before the emails came rolling in, that I'd be going back for their Semi Annual Sale. This sale is a great time to stock up on some of your favorite items, including scents they no longer carry in the store.

When I walked into the store I had a list of things that I wanted to look for. I knew I wanted to pick up hand soaps, candles, and maybe some body wash. I was shopping with a coupon, that was emailed to me, for $10 off a purchase of $40 or more. I would have never guessed reaching $40 at B&BW would be so hard!

December Favorites

Another month has come and gone! I can't believe how fast December has flown by. I have come across several new products that have made it into this months favorites.

Makeup:
Sally Girl Baked Eye Shaddow in Pink Icing, Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer in Fig

Sally Girl Baked Eye Shadow in Pink Icing- I have 3 different baked shadows from Sally's that my mom bought for me when she was in town this month. They were each under 99 cents. Pink Icing is my favorite of the 3 colors because it's so versatile, coordinates well with many different shades, and I can also use it as a highlighter on my cheeks to bring a little glow to my face. If you have a Sally Beauty Supply near you I recommend checking these shadows out.

Burt's Bees Lip Simmer in Fig- Last month I was loving Burt's Bees tinted lip balm, and this month I've found another favorite from the brand. This lip shimmer has everything that I like. It's moisturizing, it has great color, and it smells great! It has a minty smell; so minty that people have commented on how good it smells when I'm wearing it!
